Someone is usually in the shop through the morning. If the welder is down under a trailer the phone goes unanswered, so try again after dinner.
What They Build
- Gates and fencing
- Driveway and field gates to 20 feet, hinged or sliding, with hardware.
- Railing and handrail
- Porch, stair, and deck railing in steel or aluminum, primed or coated.
- Trailer repair
- Cross members, tongues, decks, ramps, fenders, and hitch work.
- Equipment repair
- Broken frames, buckets, augers, and implement welding, on site if needed.
- Structural steel
- Beams, columns, lintels, and stair stringers cut and drilled to plan.
- Custom brackets and parts
- One off plates, bushings, and brackets cut on the plasma table.
- Finishing
- Shop primer in house. Powder coating and galvanizing sent out to trusted shops.

About the Shop
Lapp Metal Works opened in 1991 in a converted machine shed on the edge of Cambridge City. Melvin Lapp learned welding repairing equipment for neighbors and never really stopped. The shop takes on fabrication and repair in roughly equal measure, which is unusual: most fabricators will not touch a broken wagon tongue, and most repair shops cannot build you a gate.
The work is mild steel, mostly, with aluminum and stainless when a job calls for it. They cut with a plasma table and a cold saw, weld MIG and stick, and send anything that needs a durable outdoor finish to a powder coater in Muncie. Small repairs get done while you wait if the shop is not backed up.
Melvin and two of his sons run the shop. They will quote a fabrication job in writing, but a repair is usually time and material, and they will tell you what it is likely to run before they start rather than surprise you at the counter.
How They Work
Know this before you call
- Lead time
- Repairs are often same week and sometimes same day. Fabrication runs two to five weeks depending on how much steel has to be ordered.
- Quotes
- Fabrication is quoted in writing off a drawing or a measurement. Repair work is time and material, and they will give you an honest range before starting.
- On site work
- They will bring a welder to your place for equipment and structural repairs inside about 40 miles. There is a trip charge and they will tell you what it is on the phone.
- Payment
- Check or cash. Repairs are due on pickup. Fabrication is half down at the steel order.
